Hello, everyone!

Sorry for the late post.  I just returned from ALT training in Sapporo yesterday.  How was your weekend?

Today is our LAST CLASS before winter vacation.  After today, the next class will be on January 14.  You have a long break!  But please don't forget your English. :)

Tonight we will talk about Christmas, winter, our plans, etc.  While we relax we will also play some games and sing some Christmas songs.  It will be a very easy, fun class.

Hello!

It has gotten very cold in Urakawa, hasn't it?  I hope you are staying warm and using your heaters.

This week our topic will be songs!  What are your favorite songs?  Do you enjoy singing/karaoke?  Do you listen to Western music?

I will bring some English songs for us to practice.  We will listen to the songs, figure out the meaning, and practice singing!

Also, next Thursday (November 27) is Thanksgiving in America, so I would like to have a Thanksgiving party on Wednesday, November 26!  Please bring lots of food and drinks.  We will discuss details on the 19th.

Hi, everyone,

My apologies for the very, very late blog post.  I was traveling all weekend, and forgot to post a new topic for you!  I'm so sorry.

Today's topic will be games.  I have various English card games and board games, so let's play!  What kind of card games do you like?  Board games?

Have you heard of a famous board game called Clue?  It's a mystery game in which you must investigate a murder incident.  It's very fun!  I think you will enjoy it. :)

If you don't want to play the games, you may watch or help other people.  If there are many people, I will probably create teams or pairs.

10/29 Topic: Halloween Cooking Class!

Hi, everyone!

As promised, this week we will have a Halloween cooking class!  On Wednesday, instead of our usual room on the second floor, please go to the kitchen room on the first floor.

We will be making spider web cookies.  To make the cookies, we will use frying pans and ovens.

Click here for the recipe.

The kitchen has many utensils, so you don't have to bring a frying pan, fork, etc.  However, in order to shape the cookies, you need a plastic bottle (old ketchup bottle is perfect).  If you can, please bring an old plastic bottle.  I am using an old salad dressing bottle.

Also, I will bring all the ingredients, so you may use mine.  However, if you want to make many cookies, please bring your own ingredients.

The ingredients are:
- flour
- sugar
- 2 eggs
- vegetable oil
- milk
- vanilla
- powdered sugar

This recipe can make at most 30 cookies.

If you want to take cookies home, please bring tupperware, bags, or plates.  And remember to wear a Halloween costume!

約束したどおり、今週はハロウィンクッキングクラスをします。普通の教室の代わりに、１階にある調理実習室に来てください。

Spider web cookiesというクッキーを作ります。作るために、フライパンとオーブンを使います。

レシピはこちらをクリックしてください。

調理実習室はたくさんの食器を備えているので、フライパンやフォークなどを持って来なくてもOKです。しかし、クッキーの形を作るために、プラボトル、プラスチック瓶、またペットボトル（例えば、古いケチャップボトル）は必要になります。みなさんができれば、古いplastic bottleを持ってきてください。私は古いサラダドレッシングのボトルを使うつもりです。

そして、私は材料をすべて持ってくるので、ぜひ使ってください。多くのクッキーを作りたい方は、自分の材料を持ってきてください。

材料：
- 小麦粉
- 砂糖
- 卵（２）
- サラダ油
- 牛乳
- バニラエッセンス
- 粉糖（シュガーパウダー）

このレシピはクッキーを３０個まで作ることができます。

クッキーを持ち帰りたい方は、タッパーウェアや袋やお皿を持ってきてください。また、ぜひ仮装してください！

10/22 Topic: Halloween!

Howdy!

Thank you for yesterday's class about monsters!  I hope you enjoyed it.  There are so many interesting monsters and legends.

For next week, I'd like to talk in more detail about the history and traditions of Halloween.  Please think about the following questions: Why was Halloween created?  Why do we carve pumpkins and make jack-o-lanterns?  Why do children receive candy?  What is "trick or treat"?

Announcement: For our class on October 29, I'd like to do a Halloween cooking lesson.  I haven't decided yet what we will make, but it will probably be cookies/sweets.  I will tell you more details next week on October 22.  If you can, please wear Halloween costumes on October 29!  I will wear a costume too. :) Let's celebrate Halloween together!

Hi!

Its looks like the typhoon has arrived in Urakawa!  Please be careful today when driving.

Because we are approaching Halloween, tomorrow's class will be about monsters, ghosts, and the supernatural.  What kinds of famous monsters are there in Japan?  In the West?  Do you believe in ghosts?  What is the scariest monster you've ever heard of?

Also, on October 29, instead of a Halloween discussion, I was thinking we could make Halloween cookies together!  What do you think? :)

Hi guys!

Thanks for the fun discussion last week.  I enjoyed singing along to "My Favorite Things" at the end of class!

Class is Canceled Tomorrow 明日の英会話クラスは休み

I hope you had a good weekend.  On Saturday, I went to the hospital because of a problem with my appendix.  I had to get surgery and stay in the hospital for a few days, so unfortunately I must cancel class tomorrow night.  Thank you for your understanding!

9/17 Topic: Fear

Hey there!

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who completed the survey.  I really appreciate your honest responses.  I hope I can make English conversation class an enjoyable experience for everyone!

On that same note, I'd like to shorten weekend speeches to about 3 minutes per person.  The "How was your weekend?" part will only be about 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes or more.  This way we can talk more about the topic. :)

This week's topic will be fears and phobias.  What are you afraid of?  What does "phobia" mean?  Have you ever had to face your biggest fear?  What happened?

9/3 Topic: What if ~ ?

Hi, guys!

Last week's topic was a little difficult, so this week I'd like to continue with the same topic of "if."  We will be focusing on the sentence structure "What if ~ ?"  This sentence structure is used very often in everyday conversation, so please try to remember how to use it.

The video below is from a famous comedy movie called Dumb and Dumber (1994).  In this video clip, the two actors (Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels) use the "What if ~ ?" sentence structure.  Please watch this video and tell me your thoughts in class on Wednesday. :) If you haven't seen the movie, I'll give you a hint: they're talking about guns!

Hi, everyone!

Long time, no see!  How was summer vacation?  Did you go anywhere?  Did you have to work a lot?

Summer Vacation and Survey! 夏休みとアンケート！

I hope you all have a great summer vacation.  (I know many of you will still be working, but please try to relax and enjoy your summer!) ^_^

Just a reminder, there are no more classes until August 20.  In other words, no class on July 30, August 6, and August 13.  The next class will be August 20, so please enjoy your one-month break from English!

Topic for This Week ７月１６日のトピック

Hi there!

Thank you for last week's discussion about bugs.  The pictures were very creepy, but I hope you had fun. :)

This week I would like to talk about dreams (夢).  First, what are "dreams"?  This word has two meanings: wishes/hopes, and images you see when you sleep.  We will be focusing on the second definition.  When you sleep, do you usually dream?  Do you sometimes have nightmares (悪夢)?  What is a favorite dream you've had?  Do you think dreams can predict the future (未来を占う)?

Topic for This Week ７月９日のトピック

Hey, guys!

The weather has been hot lately, hasn't it?  Because it is summer, I have begun to see many bugs and spiders.  Yesterday when I returned home after work, I realized a Japanese hornet (suzumebachi スズメバチ) had gotten into my house!  I was so scared!  Have you ever had a hornet in your house?

Because of this incident, this week I'd like to talk about bugs!  What kinds of bugs have you seen?  What are the most dangerous bugs in the world?  Have you ever been stung by a bee?  I also want to discuss the differences in bugs in various cultures/countries.

Announcement About Summer Vacation 夏休みについて

Hi guys!

So summer vacation is coming up in a few weeks, and I just wanted everyone to know what the schedule will be.

We will continue having class every Wednesday until July 23 (last class).  There will be no class from July 30 to August 13.  In other words, after July 23 the next class will be August 20.

Hi there!

It's finally summer!  The weather is nice and warm.

This week I'd like to talk about language education.  What do you think about English language education in Japan?  How can we improve it?  What is more important: grammar and reading, or speaking and communication?

In America students can study many languages, particularly Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, etc.  However, many students do not start learning a language until high school.  As a result, they never become fluent in another language.  How can we change this?  What are your ideas?

I really enjoyed last week's discussion about desserts.  I was surprised we were able to think of so many!

This week we will be talking about gourmet food, delicacies, and strange foods.  What is the strangest food you have ever eaten?  How was the price?  What kinds of delicacies do different countries have?  What do you think about eating animals such as cats, dogs, horses, dolphins, whales, etc.?

We will also talk about vegetarianism.  Do you know anyone who identifies as a vegetarian?  Why is vegetarianism so rare in Japan yet so common in the West?  Please think about these questions.

I'd like you to explain to the class one strange food you have eaten.  What was the taste?  Did you enjoy it?  Would you eat it again in the future?

Hey, guys!

Thank you for last week's discussion.  It seems many people enjoy gardening and ocean views.

This week I want to discuss English advertising (宣伝) in Japan.  Many times, the English used in Japanese products (商品) has bad grammar and spelling, but people don't realize this!  Many people think English advertisements are correct, but they are not.  Because English is cool and fashionable (おしゃれ), people tend to buy these products.  But isn't this detrimental to (～に悪い、～に対して悪い) English study?

Please bring at least one product (toy, clothing, bag, book, food, etc.) that has English written on it.  We will look at the English on the items you bring, and discuss whether it is good English or bad English.

では、今週日本で英語での宣伝について話し合いましょう。普通、日本で生産された商品の英語は、ひどい文法やスペリングなどがありそうですが、だれも気が付かないと心配です。それに、英語での宣伝は正しいと思う人がたくさんいますが、実際は正しくありません。ただ、英語がかっこいいし、おしゃれなファションとして考えられているので、日本人はこんな商品を買いがちです。しかし、この傾向は英語の勉強に対して問題ではないでしょうか？

英語のある商品（おもちゃ、衣服、バッグ、本、食品など）を１つ以上授業に持ってきてください。持ってきた商品の英語が正しいかどうか、話をしたいと思います。

Topic for This Week ４月２３日のトピック

Hello, everyone!

Since we talked about Easter last week, this week we will dye Easter eggs together!  I have booked the cooking room at Seishounen Home (same time!).  So let's meet in the first-floor cooking room at 7:00 P.M. :)

I will bring the dye (colors) and some eggs, but please bring more if you want to make many Easter eggs!  Also, please bring Tupperware or a box to take your eggs home.

Making Easter eggs is very easy.  First, we will hard boil the eggs.  Then, we will prepare cups of different colored dyes.  Finally, we will use spoons and our hands to put the eggs in the cups.  It's really fun, and you can eat the eggs later for lunch or dinner the next day. :)

みなさん、こんにちは！

先週はイースターの話をしたので、今週は一緒にイースターエッグを染めましょう！青少年ホームの調理実習室を予約しました（同じ時間ですよ！）。だから水曜日は１９時に一階の調理実習室で会いましょう。:)

私は染めるための色と卵を持っていきますが、だれかたくさんのイースターエッグを作りたい方がいらっしゃるなら自分で卵をぜひ持ってきてください！また、イースターエッグを持って帰るためにタッパーウェアや箱を持ってきてください。

イースターエッグ作りはとても簡単です。まずは、卵を沸騰します（ゆで卵）。次は、染めるための色の入っているカップを準備しておきます。あとは、スプーンと手を使ってゆで卵をカップに入れます。すごく楽しいし、イースターエッグは昼食や夕食には食べてもいいですよ！

Wow, spring is finally here! :) The weather is beautiful today, isn't it?  I think I will try to run outside soon!

How was your spring break? :)

This week we will talk about music and culture.  Do you listen to music in other languages?  What do you think about Western (English) music?  How is traditional European music different from traditional Japanese music?  Is it important to translate lyrics (歌詞) for foreigners?  Please think about these questions.

Also, please bring a copy of your favorite song.  Anything is fine!  If the song is in Japanese, explain what the song is about.  If the song is in English, explain why you chose a Western song!  I will use my iPhone during class, so we can listen to the songs we bring.

I hope last week's review of grammar was helpful.  This week, I'd like to finish our discussion about grammar.  Please bring your grammar sheets from last week.  If there is anyone who has a question about grammar, please ask during class.

After we finish grammar, I'd like to talk about a holiday called St. Patrick's Day.  On St. Patrick's Day, you must wear green, so please wear green clothes!  Also, I'd like to talk about doing a cooking class.  Hopefully we can do one in April! :)

Today is so sunny!  I hope spring comes soon. :)

For tomorrow, the topic will be "English Grammar."  In class, I feel that we only focus on vocabulary and communication, and it seems we rarely practice grammar.  So, tomorrow will be similar to a Q&A session.  Think hard about grammar.  What is particularly hard for you?  What do you not understand?  How do you say different parts of speech in English?  First, I would like to review the basic parts of speech and terminology.  Because someone told me she wants to practice present perfect tense, I'm thinking of doing an activity focusing on that.  Let's talk a lot!  Please prepare at least 2 questions about grammar.

Thank you for last week's discussion!  I know religion can be quite challenging, but everyone tried very hard, so I'm very happy. :)

Tomorrow, I would like us to discuss another personal topic similar to what we did last week.  This week's topic is "Memories and Childhood."  What did you used to do when you were little?  For example, what games did you play, and where did you go?  Please think about these types of questions.  In other words, how was your overall experience as a child?  During class, I'd like everyone to explain his/her favorite memory.  If you can, please bring a nostalgic item OR a photograph of you as a child to share with the class.

Are you enjoying the warm weather?  I hope winter ends and spring comes soon. :) Tomorrow we will be discussing a big topic: religion.  Western countries tend to have Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, but Asian countries tend to have Buddhism and Hinduism.  Although many Americans are Christian, the number of young people who do not have an interest in religion seems to be increasing.  In addition, in America and Japan, many people celebrate Christmas without respecting the Christian traditions and history behind it.  What do you think about this trend?  What is your religion?  What do you believe?

Hello!

I noticed it was snowing today, and I feel it might get cold again, so please continue to be careful on the roads.

For tomorrow, I would like to have a discussion about health.  Before I came to Japan for the first time, I heard things such as, "Japanese food is really healthy," "Japanese people are really thin," and "There's no obesity in Japan."  On the other hand, when it comes to Americans, usually the first thing people think of is fat people.  Are these types of images really true?  What do you think?  For the people that have traveled to America before, did your image of American people change when you returned to Japan?

I believe health is connected to many things.  Besides sports, exercise, and diet, are there any other things health is connected to?  Is your health good or bad?  Please think deeply about these questions for class tomorrow.

Hello, everyone!

I hope you had fun last week thinking of your New Year's resolutions. :) Tomorrow we will be talking about astrology.  What is your zodiac sign?  Do you believe in the zodiac?  How is the Chinese zodiac different from the Western zodiac?  Do zodiac signs affect human relationships?  Please think about these questions.  We will try to read horoscopes together.  I wonder what will happen in 2014 for you? :)

Hello, everyone!

I hope you enjoyed your long winter break! :) Urakawa has become very cold and snowy now, so be careful when driving.

Tomorrow is our first class of 2014, so I'd like us to talk about New Year's resolutions.  "New Year's resolutions" are goals or hopes you have for the new year.  In America, we sometimes write lists of our goals.  Goals can be anything!  For example, you could write: "Exercise more," "Eat more vegetables," "Travel to a different country," "Try a new hobby," etc.  We will do a New Year's resolution activity and hopefully have an interesting discussion. :)

長い冬休みが楽しめましたか？:) 最近浦河は雪に覆われて結構寒くなってきたので、運転は気をつけてください。

では、明日は2014年初めての英会話なので、New Year's resolutions (新年の抱負) について話してもらいたいと思います。"New Year's resolutions"というのは、新年に希望または遂げたいことです。アメリカでは、私たちが抱負のあるリストを書きがちです。何でもいいです！例えば、「もっと運動したい」、「もっと野菜を食べたい」、「外国へ旅行したい」とか「新しい趣味を始めたい」など書いてもいいです。新年の抱負に関するアクティビティをやってもらい、面白い話し合いができるといいですね。:)
