7/8 Topic: Last Class!

Hi, everyone!

Tomorrow is our last class before summer vacation, so there is no specific topic.  We can talk about anything, including our plans for the summer and future.  Also, we will play some games if we have time.

When the new ALT, Katelyn, comes to Urakawa on July 29, I will talk to her about English Conversation Class and write a post on here to let you know when the next class will be.  I think the next class will be either August 12 or August 19, but it hasn't been decided yet.  I will let you know soon, so please be patient.  Also, I will ask Katelyn if she wants to continue this blog.  If she does, I will notify everyone here.

Reminder: The English Conversation Class farewell party is this Saturday, July 11, at 6:00 PM at Sakazukiya.  I have made a reservation for 10 people.  We will be eating courses, so please bring 3,500 Yen for your meal.  You may bring the money tomorrow to class and give it to me, or you may bring it on Saturday to the party.  Either is OK.  If you have any questions, please ask me.

明日は夏休みの前のラストクラスなので、特定なトピックはありません。夏や将来の予定など、何でも話しても良いです。時間があればゲームもします。

7/1 Topic: Summer Activities

Hi everyone,

This week we will be talking about summer activities.  What do you look forward to in the summertime?  What kind of images come to mind when you think of summer?  What kind of summer events and festivals are in Urakawa/Hokkaido/Japan?

In New Zealand, the seasons are different.  Summer is in December, January, and February, not June, July, and August.  How are New Zealand summers different from Japanese and American summers?  What holidays are celebrated?

Announcement: I have booked a restaurant called Sakazukiya for Saturday, July 11, at 6:00 P.M.  If you can come to our farewell party at that time, please tell me during class tomorrow night.  Hattie and I would like to do courses, so I will let you know about payment methods.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

6/17 Topic: Experience

Hi everyone,

This week's topic will be experience.  For example, have you ever been to another country?  Have you ever gone skydiving?  Have you ever eaten a cockroach?  We will use the "Have you ~ ?" grammar and ask interesting questions.  Let's learn about each other's unique experiences!

Announcement: Hattie and I will be leaving Japan in July/August, so we would like to have a farewell party with you guys before then!  We want to have dinner with everyone on either July 11 (Saturday) or July 12 (Sunday).  Please let us know which day is convenient for you.  We have not made a reservation yet, but we think Sakazukiya might be a nice restaurant.  I will talk more about the party in class on Wednesday.

Good afternoon, everyone!

How are you today?  This week's topic is about how to describe and explain things in English.  How do you describe what you see in English?  Usually people use adjectives and adverbs.  They also use phrases such as "It has ~ " or "There are ~ ."

We will practice these expressions and play games.  For example, can you describe the differences in two similar pictures?  Or can you explain a specific word without saying it?

Hello, everyone!

This week's topic is about how to use the word "get" in casual conversation.  Have you heard the word "get" before?  It has many meanings.  When you think of "get," you probably think of "obtain." But "get" doesn't just have this meaning; it also means "become," "arrive," and "receive."  It's a very important word, so please try to use "get" in conversation as much as possible!

Hello!

I hope you enjoyed last week's class about magic and card tricks.  Have you been practicing what you learned?

For this week's class, we will be talking about accents in the English language.  There are many accents and dialects in English.  The U.S., the U.K., New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, and India all have different accents.  In Japan, students learn the standard American accent, but there are many accents across the world.  Let's listen to them and think about how they are different!

Announcement: Next week is the start of Golden Week holidays, so there will be no class on 4/29 and 5/6.  The next class after 4/22 will be on 5/13.  I appreciate your cooperation.

Hey everyone!

What did you do last week?  Were you able to relax?  I went to Taiwan for five days.  It was an amazing experience!

3/18 Topic: St. Patrick's Day

Hi guys,

Tomorrow is an Irish event called St. Patrick's Day.  Do you know it?  Every year St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in many countries, including Ireland, America, Canada, etc.  

Therefore, on Wednesday I'd like to talk about St. Patrick's Day.  We will discuss the origin of St. Patrick's Day, its traditions, and why we celebrate it in America.  Also, we will play some games.

To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, you are supposed to wear green clothes (T-shirt, pants, shoes, jewelry . . . anything is OK), so please wear something green to class! :) Or you can bring green food as well!

3/11 Topic: Foreign Loan Words (和製英語 and 和製外来語)

Good afternoon, everyone!

This week I'd like to talk about English loan words (wasei-eigo 和製英語) and foreign loan words (wasei-gairaigo 和製外来語) in Japanese.  Japanese is a very interesting language.  Sometimes Japanese takes English words and makes them into katakana versions.  "Wasei-eigo" is when English words are combined into new combinations for the Japanese language.  In English the meanings are usually different or there are no meanings at all, but in Japanese they are real words used in everyday conversation.

However, not all of these katakana loan words are taken from English.  There are many languages used for loan words in Japanese, such as French, Dutch, German, Portuguese, etc.  In other words, if you see a katakana word, it might not be from English!

What kind of English loan words and foreign loan words do you use in conversation?  If you say these words as they are in English, is the meaning the same or different?

今週、和製英語と和製外来語（カタカナでの単語）について話したいと思います。日本語はとても面白い言葉です。しばしば、英語の単語がカタカナバージョンにされています。「和製英語」というのは、英語の単語がカタカナでの単語に変わり、新しく組み合わされたものです。こういう単語は英語で意味が通じないのですが、日本語では本当の単語として日常会話で使われています。

ですが、カタカナでの単語はすべて、元々英語から来たわけではありません。フランス語、オランダ語、ドイツ語、ポルトガル語など、様々な外国語の単語を日本語として和製外来語に変換して使用します。つまり、みなさんが触れるカタカナでの単語は、英語の単語ではない可能性があります。

みなさんはどんな和製英語や和製外来語を会話でよく使いますか。使っている単語はそのままで英語で言うと同じ意味ですか、それとも違いますか。

1/14 Topic: Conversational Words 会話の単語

Hello, everyone!  And a belated Happy New Year to you!

It's been a while, hasn't it?  I hope you all had a wonderful New Year with your families. :) Did you eat traditional New Year's food?

January 14 will be our first class of the year, so please come.  Next week's topic is conversational words.  People studying English want to learn how to speak it fluently.  But how can you do it?  The answer lies in conversational words and phrases.  There are many useful English words and phrases you should remember.  For example, what does "What's new?" mean?  When do you say "well"?  Some of the words will be review (we did a casual speech lesson last year), but most will be new.  In addition, we will study these words more in depth.  To raise your conversational abilities, we will practice many times.

If you have any questions about a specific English phrase or word, please bring it to class so we can discuss it together.

お久しぶりですね。ご家族とお正月は楽しく過ごしましたか？:) お節を食べましたか？

さて、１月１４日は今年の最初の英会話クラスとなります。ぜひ来てください！トピックは会話の単語になります。英語を勉強している人は、英語を流暢に言えたいな、とよく言いますが、どうやって英語をスムーズに話せるようになりますか？その答えは会話の単語です。覚えた方がいい役経つ英語の表現・単語はたくさんあります。例えば、「What's new?」はどういう意味でしょうか？「well」はどんなとき使いますか？いくつかの会話の単語は復習になるかもしれませんが（昨年もカジュアル英語のレッスンを行いました）、ほとんどの単語はみなさんにとって新しいと思います。また、こういう会話の単語をもっと深く学び、そしてみなさんの会話の能力を上げるために何回も練習します。

特定の表現・単語についての質問のある方は、その表現・単語をクラスに持ってきて、一緒に話し合います。
