Christmas Party Next Week １２月１８日のクリスマスパーティー
Hello, everyone!
Thank you for the interesting discussion this week! I know slang and casual speech can be quite a challenge, but everyone was wonderful! I am making a few changes to the casual speech worksheets, so I will post them on the blog later this week for you to print out and look at. :)
Next week will be our last class before winter break, so I wanted to do a small Christmas party. However, this week there was some confusion about when the Christmas party was, so I apologize for that. If you brought food this week, you don`t have to bring anything next week.
Also, during the party, I`d like to continue our talk about casual speech and slang. And I think we should do a Christmas game or two! :)
Reminder: No class on December 25 (Christmas) or January 1 (New Year`s Day). We might have class on January 8, but I have not decided yet. I will let you know soon.

Topic for This Week １２月１１日のトピック
Hello, everyone!
I hope you enjoyed The Legend of Sleepy Hollow last week. I know the story was a bit of a challenge, but I thought everyone did really well with understanding the plot and content. :)
Tomorrow we will be talking about casual language, specifically slang words, expressions, and adjectives that are often used in everyday conversation. We will review the meanings of the expressions together and practice how to use them.
Also, next week I want to have a little Christmas party for us. Feel free to bring food and drinks. However, since we had a welcome party for Marisa and Cassie recently, you don`t need to bring anything if you don`t want to. I, however, will be bringing homemade Christmas cookies!
Announcement: I will be canceling class on December 25 and January 1 for Christmas and New Year`s Day. In other words, we will have a three-week break from December 18 to January 8.

Hello, everyone!
I'm sorry for the late post. I had training in Sapporo this weekend, and I just got back to Urakawa today, so I've been very busy! I hope you had a fun weekend! :)
For tomorrow we'll be talking about stories. Do you read short stories? What about fairy tales or legends? I will bring a book of short stories that we can look at and read together. If you can, please think of at least one writer or story that you like. I do not want to discuss novels but rather shorter stories--novellas, fairy tales, urban legends, poetry, etc.

So last week only 2 people came to class! I was very surprised, haha. Because of that, we will talk about last week's topic in this week's class (sports and club activities). I don't like sports very much, but I think it will be an interesting discussion, so please try to come!
Reminder: Next week my older sister, Marisa, and her friend, Cassie, will be coming to class as guest speakers, so please bring some food, drinks, plates, etc. for the welcome party. I'll bring something too! No vocabulary/grammar sheets for next week.

Tomorrow we will be talking about sports and clubs. What kinds of sports do you like? Have you ever participated in any clubs or activities? Do you play any sports now on a regular basis? The topic is somewhat related to last week's topic of hobbies, so let's try to have a new discussion. Even if you don't like sports, talk about why you don't like them! :)
Announcement: In two weeks, on Wednesday, November 27, my older sister and her friend will be coming to our class as guest speakers. They are traveling all the way from America, so let's be sure to give them a friendly welcome! They don't speak any Japanese, so it will be a good opportunity to practice your English. There will be no grammar or vocabulary sheets that week, but please come with some questions for our guests. Also, if you want, feel free to bring food and/or drinks--it's a welcome party, after all! I might make cookies again. :)

Hello, everyone!
So, as most of you already know, this Thursday is Halloween, which means this week's class will be a Halloween party! Please bring some snacks, drinks, etc., if you can! I will bring paper plates and utensils and hopefully some cookies! There will be no grammar or vocabulary worksheets for this class. Instead, we will do some Halloween activities/games, and I will teach you about the traditions associated with Halloween in America. :) Oh, and if you want to "dress up," please do so!

I am sorry about last week. :( Even though I was sick, I really wanted to have class! But I had a slight fever and my throat hurt, so I didn't have a choice but to cancel. Again, I apologize.
Anyway, tomorrow I'd like us to talk about what we were supposed to talk about last week--traveling, transportation, and airports. Please refer to last week's post for more information. :)
Next week is Halloween, so of course we will be having a Halloween party! I'd like everyone to bring food, candy, or drinks, if you can. I will bring plates, utensils, and some food as well. I will have more information in my next post, so please wait. :)

Hello, everyone.
I'm so sorry for the late post. This weekend I was in Osaka, and I just got back a few hours ago. I hope your weekend was great, like mine! :)
Well, anyway, because I did some traveling this past week, I thought tomorrow we could talk about traveling. For example, where have you traveled? What are some important things you should know about airports in America? The public transportation system? How is Japanese public transportation different from that of America and other Western countries? Do you think licenses are necessary to have?

I'm so sorry for the late post. This weekend I was in Osaka, and I just got back a few hours ago. I hope your weekend was great, like mine! :)
Well, anyway, because I did some traveling this past week, I thought tomorrow we could talk about traveling. For example, where have you traveled? What are some important things you should know about airports in America? The public transportation system? How is Japanese public transportation different from that of America and other Western countries? Do you think licenses are necessary to have?

10/9 Topic: Food Culture
Hello, everyone!
Again, I am sorry for the late post. >< Every week is so busy! I hope you had a good weekend. :)
Tomorrow we will be discussing one of my favorite topics--food culture! What kind of food do you like? Dislike? What food do you like to make? Is there any food you enjoy other than Japanese food? How are Western food and Japanese food different? We will answer these questions and try to compare Japanese food with food from other cultures.
If I can, I will try to make and bring some "American" food for you to try, so please come hungry!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! :) Last week we spent most of the class time talking about idioms, which means we didn't get any time to talk about cultures and customs! :( So, this week we will discuss the differences and similarities between Japanese and American (and New Zealand!) customs. Be prepared to analyze the cultural differences between Japan and the West. Please refer to the previous post for more information. :)
I can't believe it's almost October already! As we say in English, "Time flies!" (An idiom, meaning "time moves too fast.")

I'm sorry for the late post! This weekend was really busy, so I forgot to post this week's information for English Conversation Class. Did you have a good weekend? :)
This week we will talk about the differences between American and Japanese customs. Do you tip in America? Do you take off your shoes in America? Do Americans use chopsticks? etc. I will begin class by resuming where we left off in our "Idioms" list from last week.

9/18 Topic: Idioms and Proverbs
Hello, everyone!
I'm sorry for the late post. How was your three-day weekend? I can't believe how bad the weather is! The rain is so scary, isn't it?
This week I want to introduce some common English idioms and proverbs/sayings. Many of you have expressed interest in improving your conversational levels of English, so this will be a great tool for you.
As your homework, please bring with you to class ONE Japanese proverb, translate it into English, and explain what you think it means. Please introduce it to the class. Why did you choose this proverb? Does it hold any special meaning for you?
Notice: If the weather continues to be bad and dangerous for those driving, I might cancel the class. I will let you know if that happens.

9/11 Topic: Pop Culture
Hello, everyone!
So this week's topic is pop culture. We will exchange our ideas and opinions about Western and Japanese pop culture. :) We can talk about anything, from music to movies to drama/theatre, etc.
Please be prepared to answer the following questions: What kind of music and movies do you like? What do you think about pop culture in Japan? How has it changed? What do you know about Western pop culture?
If you can, please also bring something to "show and tell." "Show and tell" means you bring an object and introduce it to the class. It is similar to what we did last week with the books and novels we brought. Anything is fine! A CD, a DVD, etc. If you don't have anything to bring, don't worry about it! Just be prepared to talk about pop culture and share your opinions. :)
I hope this topic works well!
Reminder: I will (hopefully) give you the recommended reading list this week in class. Also, I decided not to split the class into two groups because not everybody comes consistently. Instead, I will bring grammar and vocabulary sheets for those who are interested in using them.

Fairy Tales and Recommended Reading 昔話と推奨書籍
Hello, everyone! I had a wonderful time in class yesterday. I loved listening to your book introductions! And talking about genres was so much fun! :)
Because we also talked about fairy tales a little bit, I wanted to post a link to a fairy tales website so you can read some online! 9/4 Topic: Books and Stories
Hello, everyone!
I hope you enjoyed last week's class! I had a lot of fun. :)
This week on September 4 (9/4), we will be talking about books and stories! You will answer questions such as the following: What is your favorite book? What kinds of books do you like? Do you read often? First, we will talk about genres in groups, and then we will discuss the history of the novel. What was the first novel? Who wrote it? Is the Tale of Genji a novel? We will also talk about the differences between Japanese and Western literature (style, subject matter, concepts, characters, etc.). So that everyone can participate, I will go over key words and phrases you should know when talking about literature.
I want everyone to bring at least one book to share with the class. Introduce the book to us. Please answer these questions: What's the plot and why do you think we should read it? Why do you like it? Have you read it more than once?
At the end, we will also talk about books being made into movies. Is this a good thing? What do you think about it?
A reminder: Hattie will be coming to the classes from now on. Also, please email me your opinion about dividing the class before Wednesday.

みなさん、本を一冊（二冊でもいいよ！）持ってきてください。その本を紹介してほしいです。プロットは何のか、なぜその本を読んだ方がいいと思うか、なぜその本が好きのか、何度も読んだことがあるか、こういう質問を答えてください。
最後に、本が映画になるという現象について話したいと思います。この現象はいいことですか。みなさんはどう思いますか。

Today's English Conversation Class and Surveys 今日のクラスとアンケート
Hello, everyone!
Thank you for the welcome party! I had so much fun. :) Did you have fun too? The food was delicious!
I looked at your responses to the surveys. Many of you seem interested in studying vocabulary and grammar. However, everyone has varying levels of English ability. Because of that, Hattie and I are thinking of dividing the class into two groups: Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced. Hattie and I would each teach a group, but we will still have class discussions with everybody at the beginning and end of class.
What do you think? If you can, please email me your chosen level (Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced).

Welcome to the Urakawa English Conversation Blog! 浦河町英会話ブログへようこそ！

Although I have everyone's emails and phone numbers, I thought it would be best to create a blog. This way, we can communicate more easily.
Each week I will post the topic for the coming class and tell you what to prepare. Please check this blog by Tuesday night every week, so that you know what we will be talking about in English Conversation Class on Wednesday.
