Class is Canceled Tomorrow 明日の英会話クラスは休み

Hello, everyone!

I hope you had a good weekend.  On Saturday, I went to the hospital because of a problem with my appendix.  I had to get surgery and stay in the hospital for a few days, so unfortunately I must cancel class tomorrow night.  Thank you for your understanding!

9/17 Topic: Fear

Hey there!

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who completed the survey.  I really appreciate your honest responses.  I hope I can make English conversation class an enjoyable experience for everyone!

On that same note, I'd like to shorten weekend speeches to about 3 minutes per person.  The "How was your weekend?" part will only be about 30 minutes instead of 45 minutes or more.  This way we can talk more about the topic. :)

This week's topic will be fears and phobias.  What are you afraid of?  What does "phobia" mean?  Have you ever had to face your biggest fear?  What happened?

If you have any questions, please email me or ask me tomorrow in class. :)

さて、今週の話題は恐れや不安や怖いこと（phobias）になります。あなたは何が怖いと思いますか。phobiaとはどういう意味でしょうか。あなたは恐れに立ち向かったことがありますか。うまくいきましたか。

9/10 Topic: Shopping

Hi, guys!

Thank you for this week's discussion about "if."  You all did an amazing job!  I know sometimes grammar can be hard, but good job.  If you have any questions about this week's grammar, please email me or ask me next week. :)

Next week's topic will not be grammar (yay!).  Instead, I'd like to talk about shopping.  What kinds of phrases should you know when you go shopping?  How do you ask for help?  Have you ever been shopping in a different country before?  What kinds of stores do you like?

9/3 Topic: What if ~ ?

Hi, guys!

Last week's topic was a little difficult, so this week I'd like to continue with the same topic of "if."  We will be focusing on the sentence structure "What if ~ ?"  This sentence structure is used very often in everyday conversation, so please try to remember how to use it.

The video below is from a famous comedy movie called Dumb and Dumber (1994).  In this video clip, the two actors (Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels) use the "What if ~ ?" sentence structure.  Please watch this video and tell me your thoughts in class on Wednesday. :) If you haven't seen the movie, I'll give you a hint: they're talking about guns!

*Note: To be able to watch the video, you must use a computer or laptop, NOT an iPhone, iPad, etc.

上のビデオは、「Mr.ダマー」（１９９４年）というアメリカ産のコメディ映画からです。このビデオクリップは、俳優の２人（ジム・キャリーとジェフ・ダニエルズ）がWhat if ~ ?の文法を使っています。ビデオを見て、自分の感想を考えてください。:) この映画を見たことがない方に、私はヒントをあげます。銃についての話ですよ！

＊ノート：ビデオを見られるように、コンピュータやパソコンを使ってください。iPhoneやiPadなどが使えない可能性があります。

Hi, guys!

I hope you enjoyed last week's class with my Osaka friend!  I had a lot of fun.  Thank you for the wonderful food!

This week I'd like to discuss hypothetical "if" questions.  For example, if you had magic powers, what would you do?  If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?  If you could visit the past or future, what would you want to see?

We will do an activity about "if," so please bring a pen or pencil.

8/20 Topic: Osaka Guest Speaker

Hi, everyone!

Long time, no see!  How was summer vacation?  Did you go anywhere?  Did you have to work a lot?

Tomorrow (August 20) we have class, so please come!  Because it is the first class after summer vacation, I want it to be a very relaxed, easy class.  

My American friend from Osaka is coming to visit me, and I am bringing him as a guest speaker.  This week's topic will be Osaka!  Have you ever been to Osaka?  What is Osaka famous for?  Can you speak Osaka-ben (Kansai-ben)?  Please prepare 2 or 3 questions for my friend.
